Butterfly Scholars mentors are consistent adults who listen, encourage, and help seniors navigate the decisions that come with graduation and life after high school.

WHAT MENTORS DO

CHECK IN

Maintain regular contact with your scholar throughout the program.

LISTEN

Get to know their goals, questions, concerns, and plans.

GUIDE

Help them think through decisions and identify realistic next steps.

CONNECT

Point them toward Butterfly Scholars resources and qualified community partners when additional support is needed.

CONSISTENCY MATTERS.

Mentors commit to the full Butterfly Scholars program cycle.

  • At least two meaningful connections with your scholar each month
  • Participation in required mentor orientation/training
  • Attendance at designated program events when required
  • Reliable communication with your scholar and Butterfly Scholars
  • Appropriate adult/student boundaries
  • Completion of required program check-ins

WHO CAN BECOME A MENTOR?

We're looking for adults with experience, perspective, and a willingness to show up consistently.

College graduates / Military members / Veterans / Trades professionals / Entrepreneurs / Educators / Business professionals / Public servants / Community leaders

A COLLEGE DEGREE IS NOT REQUIRED.
YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCE MATTERS.

MENTOR REQUIREMENTS

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Commit to the full program cycle
  • Complete the Butterfly Scholars mentor application
  • Complete required mentor orientation and training
  • Complete and pass required background screening before being matched
  • Follow all Butterfly Scholars youth-safety and communication policies
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with scholars
  • Use approved communication methods
  • Maintain reliable communication with Butterfly Scholars
  • Respect the scholar's chosen post-high-school pathway
  • Understand that mentors are not counselors, therapists, financial providers, or legal guardians

MENTORING HAS BOUNDARIES.

Mentors support. They don't replace parents, counselors, teachers, therapists, or other professionals.

If a scholar needs support outside your role, Butterfly Scholars will help connect them with the appropriate resource.

STUDENT SAFETY COMES FIRST.

All mentors must successfully complete required background screening before being matched with a Butterfly Scholar.
